Former Charlotte City Councilwoman Tiawana Brown reports to prison

ESTILL, S.C. – Tiawana Brown, a former member of the Charlotte City Council, has reported to prison to start serving a 10-month sentence. She turned herself in to federal authorities on Wednesday morning.

Prior to her incarceration, Brown shared her last moments of freedom on social media, where she mentioned enjoying breakfast with her family at a Waffle House. In September, she was sentenced after pleading guilty to conspiracy for wire fraud related to fraudulent applications for COVID-19 relief loans. According to federal prosecutors, Brown and her daughters orchestrated a scheme that led to the illegal acquisition of over $146,000 from pandemic relief programs. While Brown has filed an appeal against her sentence, her daughters received probation and home detention for their involvement in the scheme.
