Former Owner of Charlotte Checkers Michael Kahn Admits to Tax Fraud Involving Family Foundation
Michael Kahn, the previous majority owner of the Charlotte Checkers, has pleaded guilty to aiding in the submission of a false income tax return.

Michael Kahn, the previous majority owner of the Charlotte Checkers, has pleaded guilty to aiding in the submission of a false income tax return. At 66 years old, Kahn did not report over $4.5 million that he transferred from The Michael A. Kahn Family Foundation to his personal account between 2020 and 2023, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Western North Carolina.
Kahn served as the sole employee of the foundation, which he established in 2010 as a tax-exempt entity intended to support charitable, religious, and educational goals. A grand jury indicted him in January for failing to file his tax returns in 2022 and 2023, despite earning incomes over $25,900 and $27,700 during those years. Assistant U.S. Attorney Caryn Finley is prosecuting the case, which could lead to a maximum penalty of three years in prison.
