Family of murdered woman creates “Mary’s Voice” coalition to advocate for victims’ rights

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The relatives of Mary Collins, who was tragically murdered in Charlotte, argue that enhanced support for the families of victims is essential. They have announced the formation of a coalition called Mary’s Voice aimed at advocating for victims’ rights, citing the difficulties families often face in obtaining answers and accountability from law enforcement and the district attorney’s office.

In 2020, Collins, who had developmental delays, was lured to an apartment in NoDa and suffered over 130 stab wounds. Her family has expressed discontent over the judicial outcomes, highlighting that while Lavi Pham and James Salerno received life sentences without parole, they oppose the plea deal given to a third suspect, Kelly Lavery, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Mia Alderman, a family spokesperson, expressed frustration, stating, ‘No meaningful answers and no testimony at any trial. We have never been given an explanation that makes that agreement acceptable to us. In our eyes, it was a gift, a gift to a sadistic murderer. Mary deserves better.’ A fourth suspect is anticipated to face trial in December.
