Airport workers want protections in new airport lease deal

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The City of Charlotte is in the process of finalizing a new lease for the airport that will last for 10 and a half years. In this arrangement, the city acts as the landlord while airlines operate as tenants.

If an agreement is reached, the city plans to invest $2.1 billion into airport enhancements, which will include the addition of new gates and a tunnel. Airport employees are taking this opportunity to advocate for workplace protections. Catherine Poneros, co-director of organizing for Local SEIU 32BJ, pointed out the importance of considering the workforce in any development plans. Workers, some of whom carry out tasks such as cleaning aircraft and assisting passengers, are pushing for improved conditions and better wages.
