Charlotte Voters to Decide on $425M in Bonds for Transportation, Housing, and Neighborhood Projects

On Election Day, voters in Charlotte will have the opportunity to vote on three significant bond proposals amounting to $425 million, as detailed by a guide from WBTV. These initiatives aim to improve transportation, housing, and neighborhood infrastructure across the city.

The largest of the proposals is a transportation bond seeking $280 million, which is intended to finance the development of roads, sidewalks, bridges, and bike paths. The city estimates that paying back this bond will cost $437 million, including interest. Following this is a housing bond of $125 million, aimed at constructing affordable homes for low- and moderate-income families, with a repayment total estimated at $198 million. The smallest proposal is for neighborhood improvements at $20 million, designated for enhancements like sidewalks, streets, and parks, with a payback cost of $31.2 million.

A vote in favor of any of these bonds would approve the funding, and the city assures that none would raise the tax rate. However, a rejection of the housing measure would prompt city leaders to reconsider their approach. There are some opponents expressing their concerns in local media, while advocates like Keith Stanley, president and CEO of University City Partners, argue for the importance of these investments in supporting the city’s rapid growth.
