CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The CMS Board of Education’s search committee for a new superintendent convened for the first time on Tuesday. This special ad hoc committee, appointed by the school board, consists of four members, including chair Anna London, board chair Dee Rankin, Cynthia Stone, and Dr. Monty Witherspoon. London emphasized the importance of this responsibility, stating that hiring the superintendent is a critical duty of the Board of Education.
The search follows the dismissal of Dr. Crystal Hill, who was let go for convenience despite being cleared of any improper conduct. This decision, made in a 5 to 4 vote, has led to serious consequences including threats against the leadership and investigations by both the SBI and FBI. The search process will largely replicate the template from 2023, with the addition of public town hall meetings. However, critics question the board’s strategy, especially considering CMS has seen eight superintendents in the last decade. Witherspoon highlighted the need for the board to address internal issues before appointing a new leader, while a community survey will also be launched to aid in candidate profiling. Currently, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Melissa Balknight is stepping in as the acting superintendent.
